These sun prints are a methodical documentation of solar radiation using cyanotype, a photographic printing process activated by sunlight and developed in water. The sun’s imprint on the fabric creates a graphic record, formed over a measured period of time on a specific day. The prints become alternative sundials, capturing moments in time and documenting the relationship between light, shadow and water – a dialogue between designers and the skies.

During the development of the project, numerous experiments explored different ways of recording exposure. For the exhibition, these were narrowed down to several key directions. In some fabrics, graded exposures transformed the tests used to examine the relationship between exposure time and resulting shades of blue into works in their own right. In others, metallic objects placed on the fabric cast shadows and reflected light, introducing an interplay between control and chance.

In another series, fragments of ice were placed on the fabric during exposure, blocking the sunlight and gradually revealing it as they melted. The resulting tangled images resemble satellite views, linking the intimate scale of the production process to large-scale weather phenomena. Finally, fabrics exposed throughout an entire day through different patterns of openings were slowly marked by the movement of the sun, creating poetic “brushstrokes” from sunrise to sunset.
